Criteria for field volunteers

Each field project has slightly different selection criteria, but this is a general guide.

  • The ability to communicate fluently in the language(s) of the project both verbally and in writing.
  • The ability to analyse political situations.
  • A good knowledge of the history, political situation and culture of the country.
  • A thorough understanding of and commitment to PBI's principles.
  • The ability to deal confidently with a range of people including NGOs, government bodies and embassies.
  • The ability to work with computers, create and maintain office systems.
  • The ability to manage stress and work efficiently under pressure.
  • The ability to live and work using consensus decision-making with a group of people from different cultures.
  • The ability to learn quickly, analyse situations and rapidly assess their significance.
  • The ability to be flexible.
  • Respect for other cultures.
  • A willingness to carry out basic administrative and housekeeping tasks including cooking and cleaning.

There is no age limit for volunteering on a PBI project but most volunteers are aged 25 or over.
