Sir Henry Brooke and the Alliance for Lawyers at Risk invite you to a special forum:

DEFENDING THE ENVIRONMENT – A CRIMINAL OFFENCE?

incorporating the launch of the report Criminalisation of Human Rights Defenders

On Tuesday, 29 May, at 5.30pm at Matrix Chambers

Speakers:

Reverend José Pilar Alvarez (Association for the Protection of Las Granadillas Mountain, Guatemala)

Richard Hermer QC (Matrix Chambers)

Stephen Hockman QC (6 Pump Court Chambers, Client Earth trustee)

Chair: Sir Henry Brooke

Reverend José Pilar Alvarez has been subjected to baseless prosecutions on several occasions due to his work supporting Guatemalan communities who are peacefully attempting to protect their land and environment. Join Reverend Alvarez and leading lawyers as they examine how and why land rights defenders are bearing the brunt of strategies to delegitimize and impede their work, and ask what can be done to address this sophisticated form of repression.

Places are limited - please RSVP to Susi Bascon susibascon@peacebrigades.org.uk
