Lawyers protected by PBIColombiaLiliana Uribe is a high profile human rights lawyer with CJL (Corporación Juridica Libertad - Freedom Legal Corporation), an internationally respected non-profit legal services group specializing in human rights cases, which is based in Medellín. She has worked on documenting cases of extra-judicial executions and has coordinated a recent international mission in Colombia, consisting of lawyers from Europe, South America and the USA. She presented a report based on the mission to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), which was a key factor in the US withholding a proportion of its military aid to Colombia in 2007. Liliana was forced to flee Colombia for three months in 2002 in order to evade assassins after she took on the case of a death squad victim. >> Read more about PBI's work in Colombia GuatemalaThe Centre for Human Rights Legal Action (CALDH) receives reports of human rights violations and conducts investigations into these cases and is based in Guatemala City. The Centre also provides legal counselling, support, and training to organisations, groups and communities. One of its main areas of work is promoting justice in cases of genocide and other crimes that were committed during the internal armed conflict. PBI has been accompanying CALDH since 2004. José Roberto Morales Sicwas, coordinator of CALDH’s Indigenous People’s Rights Programme, has received regular accompaniment from PBI since February 2007, when two armed men kidnapped him in his car and threatened to kill him. It was founded in 1995 in response to the absence of an independent legal organisation in the region. LP3BH provides legal aid, advocacy and educational services. The Director, Yan Christian Warinussy, has been threatened at gunpoint as a result of his work. In 2005, he was the winner of the Canadian John Humphrey Freedom Award. >> Read more about PBI's work in Indonesia MexicoPBI has been accompanying the lawyers of the Tlachinollan Human Rights Centre in the state of Guerrero since December 2003. The organization focuses on assisting marginalized indigenous groups, documenting human rights violations around the state and taking them to court at the state, national and international levels. The lawyers operate under the constant threat of intimidation and attacks for the high-profile cases they have taken on, such as the alleged rape in 2002 of two women of the Me’Phaa indigenous group - Inés Fernández Ortega and Valentina Rosendo Cantú - by members of the Mexican military. From July 2001 to April 2006, the organization documented 5682 cases of human rights violations, primarily extra-judicial killings, forced disappearances, torture, rape of women; and illegal detention committed by the state security forces and the Maoists.
